About Us at Batavia, Indonesian Furniture

Batavia was founded in 2002 and set up business in an Industrial unit in Ballinluig, just off the A9. In 2004 Batavia had the opportunity to buy a shop in Dunkeld and by Easter 2005 the shop was open. In November 2005 the shop in Ballinluig closed and the business is now concentrated in Dunkeld.

Batavia is the brainchild of Nick and Airin Gilmour, Nick hails from Fife and Airin was born in Indonesia, together Batavia has developed from an idea to reality offering customers a wealth of original handmade and unique furniture and crafts from Indonesia that Nick and Airin have brought to Scotland for you.
"In 2002 I was working for a local construction company I was ready for a change and with my wife's connections and the variety of different products in Indonesia it was sort of fate and a natural progression to sell furniture initially from a building I had helped design and now from the beautiful town of Dunkeld" – Nick.

Batavia is a small family operation completed by Airin's family members in Indonesia. This gives Batavia the advantage of not only being able to find great deals but allows them to constantly research designs ensuring the authenticity and quality of each item of furniture. The business aims to grow within the local community first, hoping to attract local customers as well as visitors to Dunkeld and Perthshire.

The name Batavia comes from the old port area of Jakarta, which used to be the main trading port in Indonesia in colonial times. Batavia is still a busy port used for all domestic trading using the traditional boats called Buganese Schooners.
